Replacing Main Water Shut Off Valve

Service valves in Ontario

Learn more about what service valves do, what responsibilities The City and citizens have for service valves and water lines, where to report a service valve issue or what do to with a service valve when pouring a driveway.

What are service valves?

Service valves control the water running to a home or building from The City water main. Service valves are usually located outside the residence, either in the front, back or side of the property (for example: lawn, driveway, or private sidewalk) and occasionally they are located just outside the fence line in the back alley.

Examples of service valves

Service valves in your home – main shut-off valve

Internal main shut-off valves are located in homes where the water line enters your residence. The purpose of this valve is to allow you to shut water off in your home for a variety of reasons, including emergencies or when repairing leaks, taps or toilets.

The internal main shut-off valve is typically located either close to the water tank (usually in the basement near the floor) or should be below the water meter on the water pipe that enters your house.

Plumbing Fixture Shut-Off Valves

When a leak springs, it’s not always a slow drip. Sometimes the water will begin to rush out and start pooling on the floor of your home. Before you run to the main water shut-off valve, see if this fixture has its own personal shut-off valve.

Toilet – On the wall your toilet sits against, there will be a small valve. It is usually located below the bowl and should be turned gently (clockwise) to stop the flow of water.

Sink – Underneath the sink in the cabinet, there will be a small shut-off valve (similar to the toilet). During a pipe or faucet leak, turn the handle clockwise to suspend any water from leaking.

Washing Machine – Behind every washing machine should be two valves (and sometimes a lever). Both of these valves should be turned clockwise (or the lever should be switched the other way) in order to cease water from flowing. If you don’t see these valves (or lever), you may have to pull out the washer from the wall a bit.

  • If you get drips of water coming through your pipes even with the main shutoff valve completely closed, it’s probably time to replace the shutoff valve.
  • Clogged valve
  • Mineral deposits and tiny pieces of grit can gradually build up in an old gate valve, making it impossible to fully close.
  • This internal valve is the responsibility of the homeowner to control and maintain.
  • Homeowners who fail to maintain the valve if the valve is broken.
