How does a disposal system work?
Usually the disposal unit will be installed inside the cabinet that holds the sink and towards the back. The disposal system will usually contain the following components;
Grinding chamber this houses the blades that shred/break down the food waste that you put inside of the disposal unit into small particles.
Impeller arm/force plate the broken-down particles fall into here and forced towards the drain pipe.
If you have a dishwasher the drain line for the dishwasher would also be connected to disposal unit to help flush large particles down the drain.
There are usually two types of disposal units that are commonly available on the market. There is the continuous feed type system which works with a on/off switch and with the tap on and water continuously flowing. Local safety codes can determine how far the switch should located from the actual disposal unit and sink. Then there is the batch feed type system where you load the food waste into the unit and then turn a stopper to activate the unit.
Typically, most disposal units are designed to work with a standard kitchen drain.
