Basement Wiring Inspection Information
THE ESA PERMIT & INSPECTION PROCESS*

1 PERMIT / APPLICATION FOR INSPECTION

Whoever is doing the electrical work must apply for the necessary electrical permit with ESA before or within 48 hours of when the work starts. An electrical permit from ESA is different than a building permit.

2 ROUGH-IN INSPECTION

A rough-in inspection takes place when all branch circuit wiring and outlet boxes are installed and prior to any wiring being concealed by insulation, vapour barrier, drywall, etc.

The rough-in inspection checks that electrical work has been done in compliance with the Ontario Electrical Safety Code. It will either provide a go-ahead or identify defects that need to be fixed, in which case more than one rough-in inspection may be required.

3 FINAL INSPECTION

The permit holder must call ESA for a final review of the work as soon as possible once the electrical installation is complete and all defects (if any) have been corrected.

4 CERTIFICATE OF INSPECTION

Once the electrical work has passed inspection, ESA will issue a Certificate of Inspection to the permit holder to confirm that the electrical work is in compliance with the Ontario Electrical Safety Code.

This is important for resale, insurance and peace of mind. Only ESA can issue a Certificate of Inspection for electrical work in Ontario.
